Top Summer Plants To Add Color To Your Backyard

Top Summer Plants

Thinking of adding some color to your landscape for the summer? Nothing makes your yard look more lively and healthy than some colorful plants and flowers. Here we share a few ideas of plants that you can use to add beauty to your backyard.

Busy Lizzie

This is a sub shrubby perennial that is normally grown as an annual. It requires a good amount of water when first planted and filtered light or some shade in order for it to flourish. After planting, water your Busy Lizzie well and then wait for the top two inches of soil to dry before watering again. If you are going to use fertilizer, wait until the plant begins to grow and then fertilize every two weeks. The pretty purple blossoms will begin to spring forth in no time.

Geraniums

While geraniums offer a gorgeous red color to your garden or landscape, they must be well taken care of when growing them in Arizona. They perform best when planted in areas with warm, dry days and cooler nights. Here in the desert, it’s best to plant them where they will get some shade during the day.

Knock-Out Roses

Roses are definitely a favorite when it comes to adding beauty and color to any landscape. Most roses will develop their first bloom early in the summer. Some typed of roses, like Knock-Out Roses, will continue to flower all summer long. The nice thing about these flowers is that they are easy to grow and provide color for a long period of time.

Jerusalem Sage

Here in the Phoenix area where summers can be pretty harsh, we’re always looking for plants and flowers that are heat-tolerant. Jerusalem Sage is designed to conserve moisture through its thick and often furry leaves. The beautiful yellow flowers bloom on the tops of tall stems that are widely spaced and accustomed to warm weather.

Aster

One of the toughest perennials known to thrive through the summer, Aster is not only beautiful, but will bloom nonstop into the fall if carefully maintained. It’s easy to find Aster at nurseries and home improvement stores starting in early June. They typically come in white, lavender or pink, all of which are sure to add a strong splash of color to your backyard garden.
