We are lucky in Arizona to live in a climate that allows a green, lush lawn of grass all year round. Grass in the summer is not only able to withstand the heat, but actually flourishes in it. Winters are mild enough that certain types of grasses can stay green and lively until spring.
There are many different types of grass that you can use to keep your landscapes looking healthy and attractive. However, grass that simply looks good is not always the most important feature for some people. For some people, being able to play with their children in the grass rather than just looking at it is more important. They are more concerned with finding the best grass for their family to enjoy.
The good news is grass that looks healthy and strong is actually the most enjoyable to spend time in as well. Below you will find a few ideas and tips on what to look for when planting grass that will keep your yard inviting and ready for the family.
Bermuda – Common or Hybrid
Of all of the grasses grown in Arizona, Bermuda is the most common. It grows throughout the summer and is able to thrive even in the harshest heat. Even when it goes dormant in the last part of September each year, it is still alive underground just waiting for warmer weather.
Bermuda divides into two main categories – common and hybrid. There are some advantages to both. Common Bermuda is much more cost effective since it can be done be spreading seed. Hybrid Bermuda does not produce pollen and usually has a more desirable texture.
Hybrid Bermuda usually comes in medium or high density. The high-density hybrids look nice, but they take much more work and attention. If high density grass is not well maintained, it can turn brown quickly. Medium density hybrids require less maintenance and are still thicker than common Bermuda.
Winter Grass
When it comes to planting winter grass, Rye is the most common grass used in the Phoenix area. Rye grass cannot survive the heat of Arizona summers so it must be replanted each year in early October. It grows in nice and green and stays that way until about the middle of May.
Rye grass not only looks good, but is also soft and inviting to play in. There are 2 types of rye grass – perennial and annual. If you have kids who will be playing in the grass often, it is a good idea to get perennial Rye grass, as it is less likely to stain clothing.
At ABC Scapes, we usually suggest a medium density Bermuda for summer and a perennial Rye for winter for those with families who will want to actually play in the grass with their kids.
