Over time, shrubs over grow their designated space. During this growth, your shrub can become heavy and will require pruning. When the weight of this plant becomes too heavy, the roots can uplift and permanently damage the plant.

When pruning shrubs, it is important to remove the old, damaged, and crowded branches. When doing so, be sure to remove the branch from their base, and not off the top of the plant. It is also important to remove the crowded branches, because sunlight is a vital step in allowing the plant to thrive.  When your shrub becomes heavy and the branches become dense, sunlight cannot penetrate the shrubs interior, and prevents interior growth.
