Planting Problem: Tree Depth

Tree Depth Plant Hands Soil

We need the shade here in Arizona. For ourselves, our yards – the shade is vital. That is why such large trees are so popular in so many of our neighbors yards! If you’re hopping on the shady tree bandwagon – there are  a few things you need to know beforehand, in order to avoid making this planting mistake with the depth of your tree.

Understanding Tree Depth

Many people figure that the deeper they plant a tree, the more successful it will be. Like with all things, it does depend on the tree how deep it should go, but one thing is for sure: if a tree is planted too deep, it will die. Many figure that the more soil they surround the tree with, the more support and moisture it will receive, when in fact it can do the opposite. This actually compacts the tree, making it experience a lot of difficulty in absorbing moisture and sprouting roots.

Replicate The Planter

A good way to avoid a scenario like this is to plant the tree to the depth of the planter it came in. So lets say you are purchasing a tree that is coming in at 24 x 24 x 24 container. Replicating these dimensions when digging will insure not only that the tree with fit perfectly, but will be receptive to all the sunlight and water it needs to grow successfully, too!
