5 Natural Ways to Add Privacy To A Backyard Landscape

Privacy Backyard Trees Wall

Your home should be your refuge. But with many homes quite close together, it can be hard to feel truly secluded even in your own backyard landscape. Privacy fences are a step in the right direction, but they only help so much.

If you want to take your privacy up a notch, consider adding some natural privacy solutions through your landscaping. Here are some suggestions if you want to add privacy to backyard landscape:

Evergreens

A row of neatly pruned evergreens is a great way to add privacy to any landscape. When planted the appropriate distance apart, evergreens will eventually form a very dense hedge that leaves no gaps for nosy neighbors to peep through. And depending on the evergreen you choose, you can top your hedge off at any height.

Vines

If you prefer to take a more leisurely approach to adding privacy, you may want to consider vines as an option. Wisteria is a quickly growing vine that will add a beautiful touch of color to a boring old privacy fence. Or if classic green is more your taste, an English ivy is safe choice as well.

Bamboo

A stand of bamboo along the back edge of your landscape is a wonderful way to add privacy as well as an exotic flair. Plant it along your fence to mask the plain panels … or skip the fence completely and use the bamboo as a natural fence. To get complete privacy, you’ll want to plant your bamboo fairly close together and in multiple rows that are offset slightly from each other. And keep an eye on this one — bamboo can take over a flower bed quickly, so you may need to prune it back often.

Vertical Gardens

As container gardening has taken off, vertical gardens have become a great way to add privacy to your yard. While it’s not the most divisive of options for dividing your yard from a neighbor’s, it can be a good way to separate areas of your yard or to hide a storage area from your patio. Bonus points if you choose plants that hang down from their hanging baskets.

Raised Beds

Looking for something a little more wall-like to add privacy to your yard? Opt for tall plants raised beds. These are especially good to screen your home from the street and protect it from fast traffic. And if you really want to keep out prying eyes, you can plant a shrub hedge in your raised bed.
