Pond Maintenance Tips For Your Landscape

Maintain Pond Water Plants Trees

Whether you’re building a home zen garden or simply looking for a way to bring the wetlands to Arizona, ponds are an increasingly popular feature to include in landscapes. And like most other landscape elements, ponds need regular maintenance to keep them at their peak condition.

From leaks to filters to fish, we’ve got our best pond maintenance tips here.

Liner

If the bottom of the pond has more than an inch of buildup, it’s best to drain it and scrub it down with a bristle brush and garden hose. While it’s empty, check it for leaks or cracks and repair using a pond repair kit.

Water Level

The water level should be maintained consistently. Add water to the bottom of the pond to prevent buildup of salts and minerals. It’s best to add small amounts more often, rather than large amounts only occasionally. This makes the water’s pH balance easier to maintain.

Water Chemistry

The water’s pH balance should be tested weekly. Too much ammonia or chlorine can damage both fish and plants, and too much nitrogen can encourage excessive algae growth.

Filters & Drains

Filters and drains should also be checked weekly for clogs and algae buildup. Replace filters as needed. In the summer, add an aerator like a fountain or bubbler to increase oxygen levels, as hot water can be difficult for fish to breathe. Be sure to remove fallen and decaying leaves throughout the year, as the toxic gases these give off will alter your pond’s pH levels.

Plants

Choose the plants for your pond carefully. Stick with plants that produce high levels of oxygen for your fish. If your pond uses potted plants, divide and replant them as needed. Most plants will also need to be fertilized periodically, so research when is the best time to fertilize the type of plants you use, or ask your landscaper to assist you.

Fish

Observe fish at least weekly to check for sores and odd behavior. Fish will usually be more active in the spring, so feed them a food that is rich in carbohydrates. In the fall it’s best to feed less frequently or stop feedings altogether, as their digestions slows and uneaten food can be detrimental to the overall health of your pond.
