To properly be able to care for your lawn, it is important to first and foremost know what you’re dealing with! Evaluating what type of soil you have in your living space helps you know how to best care for your lawn, and make any amendments you might need to do to take care of it better. Here is our guide to assess your soil and figure out what type of soil you have:
To figure out what kind of so all you have, you’re going to need to get your hands dirty. A lot of times, the texture of your soil will tell you all you need to know.
Loam Soil
If your soil feels crumbly and soft, and does a great job of retaining nutrients and water, while allowing access to drain away, you probably have loam soil.
Clay Soil
If you are soil retains water, compacts easily, feels heavy, and can form into a hard mass went squeezed, you probably have clay soil. Clay is slow draining and retains water, which can make it hard for plant roots to grow.
Sand Soil
If your soil crumbles quickly and won’t form a ball, tells easily, and warms up fast, you probably have sand soil. Sand doesn’t do a great job of retaining moisture, and typically needs to be watered more frequently.
