4 Tips For Laying Sod

Laying Sod Tips Truck Worker

Whether you’re installing a new lawn or re-doing an old one, laying sod is a great way to get your yard looking nice and green. The project of laying sod is not simple, but it can be quite gratifying. In order to feel satisfied with the outcome, here are 4 tips for laying sod you should know:

Ground Preparation

There’s no way to stress good ground and soil preparation enough. This is essential for healthy sod grass growth and ultimately, a beautiful lawn.

Start by preparing the area where you will be laying the sod so that that soil slopes away from buildings or any other foundations nearby. This will help you avoid any drainage problems down the road. Next, smooth the area as much as possible by removing rocks, roots, and other surface debris. Now you can begin to mix in any mulch or topsoil you may want to use. It is recommended that you till in these soil amendments to a depth of 4” to 6” for healthy soil.

Once the soil is mixed and ready, be sure to take the time to level the ground as much as possible. You may start with a rake or hoe, but to ensure you eliminate any uneven areas or air pockets, use a roller. You’ll find that this will greatly reduce the chances of uneven areas.

Sod Installation

When it comes to scheduling the delivery of the sod, make sure it happens on a day when you will be able to immediately begin installing it. The timing of installation is crucial. To give your lawn the strongest possible start, be sure to install it as soon as possible.

When laying the sod, start by laying the sod lengthwise along a straight edge. Use a driveway, sidewalk, or any other walkway as a guide. Make sure that pieces of sod do not overlap. They should be tight against each other and it’s a good idea to stagger the sod pieces like a row of bricks.

Watering

We recommend that you begin watering your lawn within 30 minutes of installation. Keep in mind that sod is a living plant that requires both water and soil contact to survive.

Water your sod consistently every day for the first couple of weeks to make sure it is moist and taking root. It can be helpful to occasionally lift a piece here and there to make sure you are watering the sod enough. You’ll want to see that the soil below the sod is getting water too.

Mowing and Fertilizing

Believe it or not, mowing your lawn is actually an important step in keeping your newly laid sod healthy and growing strong. It’s best to wait at least 2 weeks before mowing the first time. You should start by mowing high, but then gradually lower the height.

Use fertilizer every 30 days to keep your lawn healthy. Fertilizers high in nitrogen, with medium levels of phosphorous and potassium will make the biggest difference.
