ABC Scapes Inc. recommends, where practical, that shrubs be maintained with a seasonal hard pruning in the winter months to significantly reduce the size of the shrub. The shrub is then free to follow a natural growth cycle through the rest of the year that allows flower blooms and produces a much healthier plant. For shrubs that are adjacent to driveways, walkways or in the landscaped islands in retail parking lots, the hard pruning / natural growth approach may not be practical. In these cases, a more frequent pruning called shear pruning is required and results in a more manicured appearance. Shear pruning is more labor intensive and also stresses the plant during the hot summer months.
